Penmaenmawr was a favourite watering place of the Victorians, including William Ewart Gladstone, Prime Minister, who loved the little town ‘betwixt the mountains and the sea.’
The mountain has been quarried since Neolithic times to the present day. The Victorians came here because the mountain shaded the beach, keeping the sun away from their fashionably pale complexions. Now that much of the mountain has been quarried away modern sun-lovers can enjoy a warm sunny day on the Blue Flag beach, looking out over Puffin Island and Anglesey on one side, The Great Orme of Llandudno on the other. It is sometimes possible to see dolphins and porpoises frolicking out in the sea.
Boating enthusiasts can take day membership of the sailing club or you can jet-ski from the sandy beach.
